Harry Potter: 10 Plot Points That No One Will Ever Agree On

6. Snape

Snape Snape had been a villainous figure in most of all seven books, seeming the primary antagonist in Sorcerer's Stone (yeah, I'm American) and appearing to murder Dumbledore in Half-Blood Prince. Unless you were really zealous about reading between the lines, Snape was borderline evil and deserved to die at the end of the series with all of the other evil characters. Then he did die, Harry watched his memories, learned the truth, and we all sniffed a little bit when we figured out his last words. So, Snape wasn't actually one of the bad guys. He had been playing a double agent against Voldemort and for Dumbledore all along, having been in love with Lily Potter (formerly, Lily Evans) for almost all of his life. Aw. He hated Harry for being the son of and looking like (except for the eyes) rival James Potter, but he protected Harry for Lily's sake. Aww. His last desire was to look into Harry's eyes, because they were Lily's. Aww! No, Snape wasn't one of the bad guys. He still wasn't a very good guy. Snape may have protected Harry's life, but he was also unnecessarily harsh in his punishments, insults, and frequent attempts to get Harry expelled. Some of his comments to Hermione were so cruel that I was obliged as a young girl to hate him on principle. He held grudges and was unhealthily obsessed with revenge. So, the question is: does Snape's heroism and genuine love for Lily outweigh his behavior for most of the series? Harry apparently thought so, cursing his second child with the name "Albus Severus" and referring to Snape as one of the bravest men that he'd ever known. The rest of us, however? That's still up for debate.
"'Always,' said Snape."
And I maybe forgave him a little bit.
