Scotland's 10 Most Haunted Places

9. Glamis Castle, Angus

Described as Disneyland for ghost fans, several eerie tales are attached to Glamis, which is still owned by the Bowes-Lyon family, the family of the late Queen Mother. The stories - which are said to include sightings by the QM herself - are numerous, but the most infamous is that of the Glamis Monster, said to be a giant, deformed son of the family who was hidden away in a secret room. He is supposed to have lived to a great age, and was the dark secret told to every heir of the castle on their 21st birthday. Another story is that of the Earl Beardie, who was tricked into playing an eternal game of cards by the Devil, which can still be heard to this day. Then there are the ghosts of the Haunted Chamber, where the Ogilvy clan were locked in and left to die, and the ghost of Lady Janet Douglas, which haunts the castle chapel, where a seat has been set aside for her. She was burned at the stake as a witch and her ghost appearing is reputed to herald a warning to the Bowes-Lyons.
