Scotland's most prolific ghost - dubbed the Mackenzie Poltergeist - can apparently be found lurking in the Black Mausoleum of Covenanter's Prison. This was a section of the graveyard where hundreds of prisoners from the Covenanting Wars were kept in atrocious conditions at the behest of Lord Advocate George Mackenzie, a man so brutal he was known as 'Bluidy Mackenzie'. It's thought that the poltergeist gets its energy from the fact Mackenzie was laid to rest mere yards from the site where he had the Covenanters imprisoned, and whose spirit of is believed to be at odds with the restless souls of his victims. When the phenomenon started, Edinburgh Council closed the Prison off to the public for safety on the back of reports of vicious attacks. Ghost tours do venture to the site, but those entering have reported being the targets of attacks still, with over 500 cases of these attacks recorded by 2008.
