This one actually did start as a suspected internet hoax, but turned out to be true. In 1988, a teenage girl from the southern African country of Lesotho went into labour. This was particularly unexpected, seeing as the girl had a condition called Müllerian agenesis, a condition that essentially meant that she didn't have a vagina. This, for those of you who didn't pass biology, would mean that it should have been physically impossible for her to get pregnant, or even to have sex at all. After safely delivering the baby via C-section doctors set about trying to figure out how this could have happened, and basically came to the conclusion that she was possibly the unluckiest woman alive. By looking at her records they discovered that the girl had been admitted to hospital nine months earlier with stab wounds to the abdomen following a knife fight. The story goes that she was engaging in oral sex with her new boyfriend, when her jealous ex burst in and started getting stabby. Some of the semen from the oral sex must have entered her abdomen via the wounds (perhaps from clutching them with her hands) and caused her to fall pregnant. This isn't as implausible as it seems (although it's still pretty frigging implausible), as the female reproductive organs aren't actually all neatly wired up like in the diagrams. The eggs are actually released directly into the abdomen and have to find their way to the uterus from there. It's possible that the rogue sperm did the same. According to the case report, the story is further compounded by the fact that the kid is actually the spitting image of the alleged father. Want to write for What Culture Science?
