It is thought that the Zika virus is mostly spread via mosquito. The Aedes mosquito is found all over South America and are also responsible for diseases such as dengue and chikungunya virus. There are also reports that the virus could be sexually transmitted, as a case of infection was reported in someone who had never travelled to an affected area, but had a partner who had just returned from Venezuela. Sexual transmission would obviously be particularly bad news in couples attempting to get pregnant, due to the link with birth defects. So what is being done?
