10 Biggest Dodged Bullets In Liverpool Transfer History

3. Sylvain Marveaux

In the summer of 2011, Dalglish was looking to bring in a number of tricky wide players, correctly identifying it as an area of the pitch Liverpool had lacked quality in for many years. High up on his list of candidates was Sylvain Marveaux, who had supposedly impressed at Rennes in Ligue 1. He had missed a large chunk of the 2010/11 season, however, and there were definite question marks over whether the Frenchman was really good enough to move to Liverpool. In June 2011, Marveaux was extremely close to joining the Reds, and it was reported that the only reason the deal didn't go through was because he failed a medical. Instead, Marveaux joined Newcastle United, where he proved to be a complete flop. He was lazy, ineffective and very predictable as a winger, and he scored just 10 times in his three seasons at St James' Park. He will spend this season on loan at Guingamp, with the 28-year-old deemed surplus to requirements at the Premier League club.
