10 Biggest Dodged Bullets In Liverpool Transfer History
4. Marouane Chamakh
Following a couple of productive seasons for Bordeaux in 2008/09 and 2009/10, Marouane Chamakh was linked with a move to a number of the Premier League heavyweights. He was seen as a natural goalscorer, with pace and a physical presence to go with it. Benitez expressed a desire to take him to Anfield in January 2010, in order to provide more competition in attack, while Spurs were also reportedly interested in buying the Morocco international. Instead, however, Chamakh chose to join Arsenal, with the transfer taking effect in July 2010. He played a part in the Gunners nicking a draw at Anfield on the opening weekend of the 2010/11 season, but from that point on he was extremely disappointing at the north London club. 11 goals in his debut season at the Emirates was not awful by any means, but he was clearly not good enough to become a regular there. He scored just once in 19 games in 2011/12, as he became more and more of a squad player, and he was shipped out to West Ham on loan the following season. He failed to score for them. Now at Palace, he found the net just six times last season, and is generally seen as one of the worst forwards in the Premier League. Liverpool had a huge stroke of luck in him choosing Arsenal over them.
