10 Biggest 'One Season Wonders' In The Premier League

2. Benny McCarthy

Just a year before Roque Santa Cruz, the mantle of Blackburn's attacking vanguard was shouldered by Benny McCarthy, who too was prolific in his maiden Premier League campaign.

Signed for pennies from Porto in 2006, the South African forward appeared to be a coup when he scored 18 times that season. Only a certain Didier Drogba of Chelsea accrued more with 20 goals.

McCarthy donned the blue and white of the Rovers for another three years, but never quite hit the lofty heights again. To put it into perspective, the striker netted 19 times in the league in those three seasons combined - just one more than what he did in that epic debut season alone!

He left for West Ham in 2009, where he struggled for first-team opportunities and played only 11 times over two seasons, but netting absolutely zilch.
