A month later he was sold to Newcastle United for £750,000 - a national record for a goalkeeper at the time. His time on Tyneside did not last long and he left the club in January, 1989, to sign for Chelsea. The Magpies were relegated that season and finished bottom of Division One. Beasant signed for Southampton in November 1993 for a fee of £300,000 after a relatively successful time at Chelsea. New Blues boss Glenn Hoddle opted to pick Dmitri Kharine ahead of Beasant and he soon became a favourite with The Dell crowd. In November 1997 - after four years of service - the shot-stopper signed for Nottingham Forest at the age of 38.
