Another high-point from the otherwise uninspiring tenure of Jim Smith, Gavin Peacock felt drawn by destiny to Newcastle, thanks to familial links (he had a second cousin at the club in the '50s) and his capture from Bournemouth was a massive bargain at just £275,000. Smith had envisaged Peacock as his goalscorer, and he obliged with 7 goals in his first season before the Bald Eagle was fired, before topping the scoring charts the next year with 16 as Kevin Keegan replaced Ossie Ardiles. In the promotion season, he hit the net another 12 times, before he was sold for a massive profit to Chelsea. Peacock's time at Newcastle was all too short, but the money he brought in helped fund Peter Beardsley's move, and Newcastle ended up profiting in the long run, though Smith, thankfully, was long gone by then.
