Tim Krul has been around at Newcastle for a lot longer than some might think: he was signed as a raw teenage talent from ADO Den Haag to the youth academy, turning professional the same year, in 2006. Though Graeme Souness probably didn't have a great deal of input in the deal that stole away the Dutch side's greatest prospect before he had signed terms with the club, but whatever that role, it was his smartest transfer move. Thanks to the lack of existing professional terms, Krul ended up costing just £220,000 in compensation, and is now worth a good deal more than £10m to whoever wants to prize him away. Souness' legacy is almost entirely a poor one - the Michael Owen mess in particular - but the one slight saving grace was the capture of Krul.
