In years to come, Lee Cattermole may well be looked back on as a latter-day Kevin Ball. The pair share many similarities: both shorter than the average defensive player, beloved by Sunderland fans as if a local despite coming from unsympathetic areas (Ball from the south, Cattermole a Teesside boy), and both extremely hardy footballers. Ball's superior disciplinary record could be put down to his greater composure - as well as maybe a sign of the times - but he was certainly capable of a nasty tackle, as seen below during his time at Burnley. Ball's leadership led Sunderland to a then-record points haul in Division 1, before a monumental 2-1 victory at Newcastle shifted the balance of power in the North East the following season. Ball almost tarnished his legacy in that game, hitting his own crossbar from well outside the box while making a typically robust tackle in the last minute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGBSiVOZ5Lw
