Something that still bugs Newcastle fans to this day is the issue of Jose Mourinho and his relationship with Sir Bobby Robson. The Portuguese was famed as Sir Bob's translator at a number of clubs during the 1990s including Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon and Porto. So why when Bobby took over the Newcastle hot seat from Ruud Gullit in 1999 did his right hand man not join him? Imagine that, Bobby could have held the fort, like his did with some distinction, for five years or so then his protege could have stepped in and perhaps took Newcastle to another level. Sometimes dreams are just too good to be true. Mourinho would go on to explain the situation in an interview with The Times in 2004, he said: "Bobby lives and breathes the pitch and wants direct contact with the players. "But he knew my ambition wouldn't allow me to accept an assistant coach role. "Since Bobby suspected I wouldn't accept it, he told me it would only be for a year, two tops, and that at the end of that time I would be head coach and he club manager. "But he had forgotten that I had worked with him for many years and so I knew him well. "It is unthinkable to picture him as a manager, watching from the stands. "But I didn't take him up on his offer, knowing sooner or later, my time would come."
