10 Most Ridiculously Underrated Ex Premier League Stars
5. Stan Collymore
Stan Collymore has been seriously underrated for all sorts of reasons, many of them impossible to mention on a website like this.
When he signed for Liverpool from Nottingham Forest in 1996 for a British record £8.5m fee, he was among the most highly rated forwards in a golden age of attacking play. Shearer, Sherringham, Ferdinand, Fowler and Cole lit up the division with an extraordinary volume of goals, and the feeling was that Collymore had the potential to be better.
Aside from the ability to score 20 plus goals a season, he was cultured, with genuine technical ability and brilliant strength and pace. He scored the winning goal in perhaps the most famous Premier League match of all time, when Liverpool came from behind to beat Newcastle 4-3 and deny them the title.
Unfortunately off the field problems took their toll: notable for his party lifestyle, even among team mates labelled 'The Spice Boys' in the mid 90s, he eventually checked into The Priory. A lack of discipline and injury resulted in Collymore never fulfilling his potential.
