The original goal-scoring midfielder who should really have more trophies to his name; before Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard, Lee was the one banging them in from midfield. For a time he was the best midfielder in the Premier League, and his passing skills were as extraordinary as his scoring rate.

Arriving at Newcastle from Charlton in 1992, he helped catapult Newcastle to promotion with a record points tally. His goals were vital, as he supported Andy Cole and David Kelly with 10 strikes of his own.

Once promoted he didn't stop, with seven more in the 93/94 season. Many of these goals were remarkable in isolation, either a deft finish to end a terrific team move or a powerful run and thunderous finish. He made arriving late into the box an art before Lampard got started.

Once Ruud Gullit arrived at Newcastle however, his career wound down, as he was inexplicably excluded from the squad and denied a shirt number for the 99/00 season. Lee was restored to the team once Bobby Robson arrived but he was a bit long in the tooth by then, and his move to a more defensive midfield role failed to recapture the old magic, though it was effective in the short term.
