10 Newcastle Players Who Became Legends In One Moment

2. Shola Standing Up (Down) To Dennis Wise

If anyone ever asks you whether and why Shola Ameobi was ever loved at Newcastle, now that his near 20 year association with the club is over, you can reply that there was a moment very early on when the striker represented everything about the naivety and brilliance of untamed youth. It wasn't a run or any specific show of silky skill - or even any of the infinitely valuable goals he scored against Sunderland - that made Newcastle fans sit up and take notice - and never let anyone tell you they ALWAYS hated Shola, it's untrue - it was his debut when he laughed in Dennis Wise's face. In a moment that was reminiscent of Juninho's infamous attempt to tell Philippe Albert off, despite the physical differences, Dennis Wise approached Shola with anger and squared up to him. Or more appropriately, he squared up to the NTL sign on the front of Shola's shirt. Despite being as green as green can be, Shola didn't flinch as the pocket-rocket fired abuse at him, even laughing at the ridiculous little man who would go on to royally p*ss off every single Newcastle fan. That fearlessness should never be forgotten.
