10 Newcastle United Rumours That Need To Die Immediately

3. Mike Ashley Is Selling Up

The Rumour Because Mike Ashley has invested in gaining control of Rangers, he's on the verge of selling Newcastle, because he can make more money out of the Glasgow sleeping giants. The Truth Nope. First off, Ashley doesn't actually need to own Rangers to make a lot of money out of them: he needs only own the club's assets, which he can pick up like Monopoly properties by giving them "emergency loans" every month that they have no hope of paying back to him. Once he's got control of the assets, he arguably no longer even needs control of the boardroom, and even if the newest iteration of Rangers goes bust, he'd still be in control of the key contracts and assets when it was reborn as a new company. Selling Newcastle wouldn't make any sense: it's profitable, it's paying his loan back and it's good for his Sports Direct brand (maybe not locally, but nationally).
