10 Newcastle United Rumours That Need To Die Immediately

2. Newcastle Are Not A Big Club

The Rumour Because the Magpies haven't won anything since 1969 (and even that was a Mickey Mouse competition), they have been demoted from the Big Club band by Everton, Aston Villa, Sunderland and any other clubs' fans who have a massive chip on their shoulder. The Truth Winning doesn't make you big. It helps of course, but it's simple enough to point to historical periods where there were no bigger clubs in England than the Magpies. Crowds matter of course, as 50,000 or so Geordies will inevitably say, and commitment to the cause despite no success romanticises the "size" of the club. You could point to turnover, or "richness" - both of which are high for Newcastle, and you could point to the cumulative number of Premier League points won (not as high as it used to be). But in the end, the question of club size should die. It doesn't matter to Newcastle fans whether other fans think the club is big; it arguably doesn't even matter if the club is big, what matters is that it is the only club. Everton, Sunderland and Villa fans in particular seem obsessed with the idea that the Toon Army imagines itself to be grand, when in fact their opinions of our club says more about them than it does about us. What does it matter how big your club is? What matters is how much you love it. It's just lucky for us that Newcastle happens to remain a big club.
