10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Man City

5. Steve Daley

Steve Daley's flop at Manchester City was so great that he now uses it as the focal point for humour in his role as an after-dinner speaker. It is good that Daley can look back and laugh as his time at City was far from fun for the midfielder. After a successful spell at Wolves, including top performances that helped his club reach the 1972 UEFA Cup Final, Daley signed for Manchester City in 1979. He made the move for a record fee of £1.4 million, much to the shock of the player himself. Back in the 1970s this was an astronomical fee for a footballer, especially considering Daley was not one of the county's top players, only playing a handful of games for England 'B'. One possible reason for the huge transfer fee is that local rivals, Manchester United, had just bought Bryan Robson for a similar amount, and City may have felt the need for 'one-upmanship'. Daley struggled with the pressure that was piled on him due to his high profile signing. Scoring just four goals in 48 league appearances and not playing well along the way, the midfielder left Manchester within two years of his arrival. He had some success at Seattle Sounders but will forever be remembered by many as the "biggest waste of money in football history."
