10 Players You Totally Forgot Played For Southampton
8. Chris Woods
Wright is not the only former England goalkeeper to enjoy a brief and forgettable spell at Southampton when long past his best. During a successful career with Norwich, Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday, Woods had accrued 43 England caps and had generally been regarded as a top class goalkeeper fondly remembered by those three clubs. By the time he arrived at Southampton in the autumn of 1996 he was 36 years old, however, and well passed his best. By 1996 Woods had entered the semi-retirement that was the fledgling American MLS, but that didn't deter Graeme Souness during his brief spell as Saints manager. Souness bought Woods on loan from Colorado Rapids in the hope that the ex-England man would dislodge the not always reliable Dave Beasant from the number 1 spot and make the move permanent. Woods played all of four games before breaking his leg and jetting back to America. Saints fans didn't miss him too much, however, as the standout match of his Southanpton career involved the keeper, who had once gone 1196 consecutive minutes without conceding, shipping 7 goals against a mediocre Everton.
