10 Players You Totally Forgot Played For Southampton
9. Richard Wright
Currently warming the bench at Manchester City as he waits for a goalkeeping crisis to put Joe Hart and Willy Caballero out of action, Wright was once considered the future of the England number 1 spot, a replacement for David Seaman for both club and country. By the time of his brief Southampton career, however, Wright was an easily forgettable presence. In 2000-2001 Wright had the world at his feet, a member of the England squad for Euro 2000 and a big money new signing for Arsenal. By the time he signed for Southampton in 2008 it was a different matter. His England debut was so appalling, giving away two penalties against Malta, that his international career was over almost as soon as it had begun. Meanwhile, his time at Arsenal was most memorable for an incident when he punched the ball into his own net against Charlton. He had signed for Everton the following year, but suffered a series of freak injuries, such as tripping over a sign warning players not to warm up there. He only signed for Southampton on loan from West Ham after regular goalkeepers Kelvin Davis, Bartosz Bialkowski and Michael Poke were all ruled out with injury. Wright played seven times for struggling Saints before returning to West Ham where he was promptly sold back to his first club Ipswich.
