10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Newcastle
9. Carl Cort
Carl Cort was signed with high hopes back in 2000. As a teenager he had plied his trade at Wimbledon and managed over 70 games in four years at the club. During that time he was seen as one of the great England prospects and while he was with the under 21 team he notched up an impressive eight goals in 14 games. Unfortunately, just as transfers go today, Bobby Robson had to pay an inflated price to manage to get Cort to go to Tyneside. He left Wimbledon for a huge price of £7m and then proceeded to see his career fall apart while up north. During his four year spell with Newcastle, Cort managed only 22 appearances for the club and saw season after season ruined by injury. Corts first season for the Toon was ravaged by injury, but he did manage five goals in ten appearances from March 2001 until the end of the season. He then made just a handful of appearances over the next three seasons and moved to Wolves before becoming somewhat of a journeyman. Cort had bags of potential, and he could have fulfilled it had injuries not plagued his career.
