10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Newcastle

10. Jon Dahl Tomasson

A Champions League winner, Jon Dahl Tomasson has had a pretty successful career, spending his time with the likes of AC Milan, Stuttgart and Villarreal and winning an abundance of trophies and played with some of the best players in the world. So there was obviously something about him, which Newcastle recognised early. However his time on Tyneside was filled with turmoil. After an incredibly successful pre season with the club, leading striker Alan Shearer suffered an injury that would see him miss the first half of the season. This left JDT competing with the likes of Faustino Asprilla, Ian Rush and Andreas Andersson for the top man's job, and it was of limited surprise that he was deemed the best option by Kenny Dalglish. Sadly, playing alone was something he was clearly not ready for or suited to. It even took a pity goal for him to officially get off the mark for the Toon, with a deflected Des Hamilton goal being credited in his name, and then his first official strike for the club came mid-November. Tomasson had a lot of promise, and had been impressive for both Heerenveen and Køge, his two previous teams: he had featured 35 times for the club in his single season in England, netting just four goals. He wasn't ready to be the main man at Newcastle, and later went on to have an excellent career, winning both the Champions League and UEFA Cup, as well as Serie A and the Bundesliga with AC Milan and Stuttgart.
