The less said about Carl Cort, probably the better. Once touted as a future star for England after netting eight in 14 for the U21 side, he eventually ended up representing Guyana instead. The gifted striker was on the up when he signed from Wimbledon in 2000, somehow managing to convince Sir Bobby Robson to part with £7,000,000 for his services on a five-year contract. After scoring on his home debut against Derby County, Cort suffered with numerous injuries, particularly struggling with his hamstrings. Fast forward four years to 2004 and Cort had only managed 22 games for Newcastle, scoring an acceptable but uninspiring seven in the process. There was a run for a while where he looked like he might have been on the up-turn but it proved short-lived, and fans were left wondering if the rumours that Sir Bobby Robson had signed the wrong Wimbledon striker were true.
