10 Things Diego Maradona Wants You To Forget

2. The Rivalry With Pelé

The debate about whether it is Maradona or Pelé who deserves the prize of being named the greatest player of all time continues to rage on, even as Messi and Ronaldo continue to muddy the waters with their incredible dominance of the modern game. While their rivalry on the field (although their careers only barely overlapped) should never be forgotten, it basically comes down to perception. As Diego said himself:
"My mother says I was the better player, and Pelé's mother says it was him."
Their rivalry has led to several less-than-savoury incidents including them laying into each other in the press and Maradona making serious allegations about Pelé's personal life. Even when being honoured Maradona managed to show his petty side. At a FIFA awards ceremony in 2000, Maradona left immediately after claiming his prize to ensure that he wouldn't have to see Pelé collect his. Classy. Pelé appeared on the first edition of Maradona's chat show where they had a bit of head tennis while dressed as extras from Battlestar Galactica. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSRz3IZKhUg
