10 Things Diego Maradona Wants You To Forget

3. That Celebration At World Cup 1994

It's often said that Maradona is his own worst enemy and the 1994 World Cup in the USA proved that. He finished off an incredible team goal against Greece in Argentina's first game and sprinted off toward the camera, desperate to enjoy his moment of vindication after a tumultuous season. Perhaps he showed too much to the camera though. His impassioned cry became a whimper when, after the next game against Nigeria, he tested positive for Ephedrine (a banned stimulant). The 33-year-old who had dragged Argentina to their second World Cup win almost single handedly just 8 years before was thrown out of the tournament.
"They have retired me from soccer. I don't think I want another revenge, my soul is broken."
It was a tragic end to an incredible international career and Argentina went onto crash out in the second round, losing 3-2 to Romania.
