11 Players Newcastle Fans Wrongly Thought Were The Future

7. Samuel Adjei

The number of foreign players who have come into Newcastle and failed to make the grade over the years has been considerable, and since around 2000, there seems to have been an uplift in the number of hyped kids coming in from lesser foreign clubs as the scouts seek the next big thing. When Mike Ashley came in with his grand agenda to pick up the world's best youth talent and turn it into profit making superstars who could be sold on, Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere went on their merry way scouring Europe for the best prospects. One of those chosen as a big talent was Swedish striker Sammy Adjei, who had been first spotted as a 12 year old and was brought to Newcastle as a 17-year-old with Porto apparently sniffing around. Inevitably, because the "transfer dream team" needed to be seen to be successful, Adjei was talked up as a starlet and a wonder-kid of sorts, but he failed to make any kind of impact at all at Newcastle and was released back to his old club in 2012. It doesn't help when the man who discovered Adjei as a 12-year-old - Michael Anderberg, president of Swedish lower league club Waggeryds IK - says things like: €œHe has always been an extraordinary talent.€
