11 Players Newcastle Fans Wrongly Thought Were The Future

8. Peter Ramage

There was a story once that the only problem Newcastle's dressing room had with languages was helping anyone understand what Peter Ramage was saying, but for a while his footballing skills were suggested to be good enough to cope with any communication defiencies. Like Remie Streete and Steven Taylor, Ramage - born in Whitley Bay and now with Barnsley on loan from Palace - won the Wor Jackie award for youthful excellence in regional sport, and big things were hoped for the centre-half who grew up playing alongside Steven Taylor for Cramlington Juniors and Newcastle. He was so well-considered that he was actually at the club for twelve years before Kevin Keegan failed to give him first team assurances and he left for QPR. As with all local lads, hype replaced actual skill, and he was another of the Wor Jackie graduates to seemingly suggest the award has an unhelpful impact on careers.
