12 Most Expensive Transfers In Premier League History

6. Andy Carroll - Newcastle United To Liverpool (£35 Million)

We've already mentioned him, but wow wasn't this a bad buy? Liverpool are always desperate to find their next iconic striker and when they signed Andy Carroll from Newcastle United in 2011, they must have seen this lad as the next big thing. Sure, he had been impressive on Tyneside - he scored 11 goals in 19 league games that season before his move - and he'd just been capped for the first time by England. But if there's an example of that growing notion of 'English player tax,' it's definitely evidenced here. That half-a-season in the Premier League was his first real run in the top flight, having only come up from the Championship at the end of the last campaign. £35 million for most top players is a stretch, but paying £35 million for a lad who has six months experience at the level you're buying him for is completely nonsensical.
