12 Most Expensive Transfers In Premier League History

5. Juan Mata - Chelsea To Manchester United (£37.1 Million)

Panic buy? Quite possibly. It was David Moyes who bought Juan Mata after all. That's not to dispute the fact that Manchester United's second most expensive signing is one of the leading creative midfielders in Europe, but early in 2014, he was not the type of player they needed to sign. Paying over £37 million for the Spaniard was more of a statement of 'we'll show you we can still spend big' over 'we're back in the title race'. His arrival has complicated things at Old Trafford. He's not hit the heights of his Chelsea days yet and Mata needs to be accommodated in any formation the club play. Only effective while playing off the front, Mata doesn't have the strength or speed to play in a deeper or wider role. Sure, he might prove the naysayers wrong and come good after all - but it's evident that the way United's squad looks after the latest transfer window that Juan Mata could be one expensive casualty.
