14 Biggest Premier League Transfer Mistakes Of Summer So Far

2. Frank Lampard - Chelsea To New York City To Man City (Loan)

Frank Lampard's move from Chelsea to New York City FC looked pretty inconspicuous. The England midfielder had left the Blues at the end of his contract and was seemingly set to follow in the footsteps of former England teammate David Beckham in jaunting off to the United States to play out what remained of his career. Yet the transfer took a dramatic twist at the beginning of August when it was revealed the legendary midfielder had been loaned out by the MLS club to Manchester City until the New Year during the USA's off-season. New York City are jointly owned by the Citizens, who have registered Lampard to play in this season's Premier and Champions League. The move could very easily turn out to be a mistake for Lampard, who risks alienating himself from Chelsea fans - some of whom have accused him of betrayal and have promised to burn shirts with his name on. Until now, Lampard was an undisputed Chelsea hero having made 648 appearances for the Blues, overtaking Bobby Tambling's all-time goalscoring record in the process by netting 211 times. However, that legacy is now in question following the transfer to one of his former side's biggest rivals.
