15 British Players Who Returned To Their Former Clubs
11. Peter Beardsley
Here's a rare case of a player being at the same club three times during his career. Peter Beardsley is well known as one of Newcastle United's most famous sons but he was first released as a teenager by them when they didn't think he could go all the way.
He ended up starting his playing career for Carlisle United in the Third Division in 1978 instead before a bizarre move to Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps four years later. After a brief spell at Manchester United where he trotted out just once (in a league cup match no less) he returned to the Whitecaps before Newcastle United finally brought the skilful attacker home in 1983.
Teaming up with captain Kevin Keegan, one of the best players in the world at this point, Beardsley would go on to score 61 times in 147 appearances for the Magpies. After crossing the Pennines, he had successful spells at both Liverpool clubs before coming home again to rejoin Keegan - freshly installed as manager - and netting another 47 goals in 129 appearances for the Toon.
Beardsley is widely regarded as a club legend and rightly so. Though he won his football honours with Liverpool, Pedro always looked best playing in his native black and white.
