Joey Barton holds a special place on this list due to the unusual nature of his enforced return to a previous club. In the summer of 2016 Barton left Burnley to join Scottish legends Rangers on a two-year contract.

Many felt the combative midfielder would fit in well in the SPL as Barton, despite advancing years, played a vehement style with a passion unmatched by many of his team mates throughout the years.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. By September, Barton had already been suspended by Rangers for three weeks following a training ground bust-up with Andy Halliday. By November, his contract had been terminated.

Burnley spared his blushes by taking him back in January 2017, giving him the chance to redeem himself. He played 18 more times that year and helped ensure his side's safety in the Premier League. Barton is currently without a club after being handed an 18 month ban for illegal betting activity while a professional player. He is presumed retired.
