Stoke City have always arguably had an inferiority complex: one of the more well known chants produced by their fans is entitled We are Stoke! a repetitive song with only three words sung to supposedly remind opposition exactly who they are playing against. This may explain the need for Asics to brandish the clubs name across the front of the 1997-98 away kit, which combined with the colours and general design to look particularly amateurish and laughable. Stoke have come a long way since they days of this shirt, both on the pitch and in the wardrobe, but equally ex-Premier League teams that once had great style, such as Leeds United or Nottingham Forest, are now struggling to put together a decent looking kit.
