From: Roma To: Liverpool Fee: £20 million (Source: BBC) Alberto Aquilani, despite very stiff opposition it has to be said, has to go down in history as one of Liverpool's worst ever Summer signings. Liverpool purchased this Italian playmaker from Serie A side Roma and at the time, it looked like just the big money signing that Liverpool desperately needed to provide that creative spark in midfield. The one worry for Rafa Benitez was his dubious injury record which slightly hampered his game count for Roma, however miraculously passed his medical At Anfield and joined the Reds in 2009. Ever since joining Liverpool for a massive price, it has to be said Aquilani has largely been a disappointment. In the one season he was wholly at the club, he only made 18 appearances, admittedly because of inevitable perpetual injury problems, but also because in the games that he did feature, he seldom commanded and dictated the tempo of the midfield as envisaged by Benitez, with only 1 Liverpool goal to his name. So with those performances in mind, he rapidly spiraled down the Anfield ranks and the, at the time new Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson, quickly fathomed on to the fact that Aquilani was surplus to requirements and he was swift to transport him back where he came from, after less than one season at the club.
