5. Juan Sebastian Veron

From: Lazio To: Manchester United Fee: £28.1 million (Source: BBC) When Manchester United unwisely splashed the cash on this Argentinian play maker and in the process breaking the English transfer record of all time, many people deemed that his performances would decide the outcome of the title race. Veron was acquired for £28.1 million, (still the 13th highest in history and the third highest in Man Utd history) in the hope that he could weave his Argentinian magic in the Premier League, like he had done in Serie A. However his time at Manchester United can only be described as an unmitigated disaster. He was not bestowed with time on the ball, like he had been provided with in Europe, hence he had serious trouble adapting to the pace of the Premier League, which incidentally, has seen the demise of a myriad of other talented imports from Serie A. With only 8 goals in his two bitterly disapponting years at Old Trafford, I'm convinced, despite vigorous public backing, that Ferguson would have anticipated a much greater contribution to the clubs triumphs from the £28 million man. His sorry spell on English soil didn't end with United however, as in 2003, Ferguson sold Veron to title rivals Chelsea for £14 million where his bad form remained relentless and he only played 14 goals for the Blues, scoring just one goal in the process....
