From: Hamburg To: Manchester City Fee: £10.4 million (Source: The Telegraph) Another Manchester City flop makes up number 9 on this list. City paid Hamburg around £10.4 million for Jerome Boateng's services back in the summer of 2010, as part of the Man City summer spending spree in which they also acquired David Silva and Yaya Toure. The commanding centre back was seen as the rock of the Bundesliga, before he joined Manchester City, and his fine form in Germany was rewarded with a place in the German national team. So with Boateng's career escalating, City fans were optimistic about his prospects at the club. However, when he joined City he typically struggled to adapt and cope with the high pace and high pressure of the Premier League and as a result was very swiftly moved to the reserve eleven, behind the likes of Vincent Kompany and Kolo Toure. He never succeeded in breaking back into the first team again for Manchester City and only partook in 16 games, in the year and a bit he was at the club. Unfortunately his poor club form, tarnished his International prospects, so he hastily moved to Bayern Munich in 2011, in a search for first team football and to resurrect his spiralling career.
