5 Greatest English Footballers Of All Time

1. Bobby Charlton

Top spot in this list goes to a prolific goalscoring midfielder for both England and Manchester United, for whom he played well over 700 games. He was equally adept at shooting with either foot, much to the detriment of so many opposition goalkeepers. Sir Bobby Charlton's influence in the game is massive, and he was the main man in England's success at the 1966 World Cup. He was one third of United's fabled 'Holy Trinity' that also featured club legends George Best and Denis Law, and was instrumental under Jimmy Murphy's management in the club's revival after the Munich Air Disaster of 1958. I personally consider Paul Scholes the more naturally gifted footballer of the two - there is no Englishman that matches his technical ability - but I opted for Sir Bobby at number one primarily because of '66. In addition, I think it is no small feat that even after the plane crash he managed to find success with Manchester United and England; both sides were greatly damaged with the loss of such quality players as Duncan Edwards.
