It isn't often, if ever, that Mike Williamson gets himself into one of these articles as a "hero" - he regularly does as a "villain" - but low and behold, here he is. Incredibly, Williamson wasn't even out on the pitch for Newcastle and still he found himself a hero on the night. Usually it would be a blessing to many fans not seeing Williamson in the starting line-up, but when your centre-back partnership is Shane Ferguson and Lubomir Satka, even the former Wycombe Wanderers defender looks like an upgrade. He'd been pretty dire during the first three pre-season games, but Williamson is a centre-back at the end of the day - and should have played, even on a plastic pitch. Oh how absence makes the heart grow stronger...
