5 Most Surprising Football Transfer Stories Of 2013/2014

2. Rangers FC Signing 8 Players During Transfer Embargo

hunsCharles Green is back at the League 1 (the new Scottish Second Division) club, and he's already causing problems for Ally McCoist with outbursts about heightened expectations and transfers. What€™s more surprising is that Rangers have signed anybody at all during this transfer window, given the fact that they are not allowed to do that very thing. The transfer embargo was a stipulation of Rangers 2012, the phoenix-like newco of the historical Rangers, being allowed into the Scottish Third Division last year. It said that Rangers could not sign players until after the current transfer window; however, they were allowed to register out-of-contract players after September 1, 2013, like any normal club. There are a few problems with this, however, including the Scottish rule that players have to be registered within 14 days of signing a contract, and the fact that League 1 rules dictate a maximum squad size of 22 (Rangers have over 30 at the moment). Finally, if you add to this the fact that Rangers are signing former-SPL players to play in what is effective the 2nd bottom level of competition in Scotland (playing against part-time players, and losing to them in the case of the Forfar game last weekend), this is a rather surprising transfer story.
