5 Premier League Managers Under Pressure

2. Malky Mackay

Newly promoted Cardiff City currently just have their heads above relegation water. It's not so much how the Bluebirds are performing in the Premier League as what has been going on behind the scenes in the Welsh capital as to Mackay may get the boot. He lost a key ally in the hierarchy when head of recruitment Iain Moody was sacked. Speculation was rife that Mackay had been asked to resign €“ something he strongly denied. The spectre of the sack hangs over him, however. After taking over 50 years to return to the top flight neither club nor own Vincent Tan will want to surrender that status. An emotional first ever South Wales derby against Swansea in the Premier League this weekend may shape Mackay's destiny. It seldom gets any easier for the Bluebirds thereafter either. Following an away day at Aston Villa they host Manchester United and Arsenal. December is kinder at first, but the Christmas and New Year programme is cruel on Cardiff. Mackay may have done what predecessor Dave Jones failed to do, but there is precious little room for sentiment in the results-based business of football nowadays. Any dismissal in the Welsh capital would be harsh, but hardly surprising.
