When a club's owner prefers not to have the "financial trauma" of changing managers, and can be easily convinced that Joe Kinnear is not only employable, but a decorated manager and door-opener extraordinaire, you've got a recipe for disaster. If recent reports that Ashley is loath to pay out to sack Pardew are true, then it seems likely that any suggestion that the manager can guide the side to safety will be enough to ensure he stays in a job. And given the precedent set by Kinnear's illogical employment, it seems that convinced Ashley of football matters isn't exactly a difficult prospect. Right now, it looks like Ashley would prefer his manager to quit, which costs a lot less than sacking, and there's even the hint that he won't change the management team at all if survival can be guaranteed.
