If you had told me Arsenal and Tottenham would be topping the tables 5 games into the new season I would have thought I was dreaming. No one would have predicted either the decline of Manchester United with a paltry 7 points out of 15 under the stewardship of David Moyes, yet the league table does not lie. To think that Hull are (albeit goal difference) sharing 8th place with last years champions shows that no one could predict the outcomes of most of the games thus far. As an Arsenal fan I will admit to having a certain level of arrogance in the past going into some games thinking they were already won and in the days of The Invincibles that was often the case. However nowadays this is becoming increasingly rare. You only have to look at the season before last where Man City won the league on the last day of the season, with Utd throwing away a hefty points advantage against the likes of Moyes' Everton. Villa beating the Gunners on the opening day of the season, City destroying Utd 4-1 the weekend just gone, these all point to a barnstorming season ahead and so it should be. Aside from the elite clubs, which have been City and Utd recently, no one else stood a realistic chance of winning the league and this does lessen the enjoyment factor for the neutral. We can't boast that ours is the best league in the world when the title and most of the relegation places are decided weeks before the final game of the season. What we have seen at the start of the 13/14 edition is a readdressing of the balance of power in the league where it is possible for the rank outsider to pull off a sensational victory or old time wonder teams to reclaim some of their brilliance. Can Hull beat West Ham and possibly go on to avoid the drop? Yes.. I think they can.
