Liverpool: 10 Reasons Why They Won't Win Anything This Year

4. Liverpool's Status

Much has been talked about Liverpool€™s status in the last couple of years. They€™ve gone from being the best team in England in the 1970s and '80s declining to a top four side in the past twenty years or so. Now Liverpool have slipped from this position to a top six or top eight side, much to the dismay of the fans. It€™s a difficult task because if Liverpool want to get back to the top four they need to buy big players, however due to them not having Champions League football they can€™t attract the stars to Anfield anymore. On top of this, after the new owners were so free with funds with Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli and, in return, not seeing anything coming from the signings that the two brought in, it seems unlikely that they€™ll give Rodgers a big transfer budget to compete with the top sides. Liverpool have enough to buy talented players for about £15 million (Daniel Sturridge being an example) and will probably have to make do with more low key signings in order to build a strong team, rather than buying big players. Ultimately, it might take some time before the owners are willing to give Rodgers more of a free hand with transfers in which case he€™ll need to buy good players in order to prove himself in the next few transfer windows.
