Man Utd Transfers: 5 Essential Summer Targets

3. Mats Hummels

Considering Nemanja Vidic is 31 and Rio Ferdinand the bus-pass-worthy age of 34, it is fair to say Sir Alex Ferguson is in need of a new centreback. One might say that United already have enough cover in that department with the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling capable of playing in that position, but the feeling is United need someone with the sort of experience the aforementioned duo bring to the side. United have the worst defensive record of any side currently in the top four of the league, and but for a number of traditional last-gasp winning goals, their leaky defence would probably have left them some way off the current 12-point gap they have put between themselves and their City rivals recently. According to the Express Ferguson has identified Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels as a potential transfer target having sent his chief scout to watch the German centre-back in action toward the end of last year. Hummels has been an integral part of Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund side and is one of Europe's most sought after defenders after helping his side claim back-to-back Bundesliga titles between 2010 and 2012. He also helped his side qualify for the last-16 of this season's Champions League after Dortmund emerged as winners of the so called "Group of Death" ahead of Real Madrid, Ajax and Manchester City. If Ferguson were to make a summer move for Hummels, it wouldn't be the first time he has swooped upon the current German champions to harvest them of key players. He signed Shinji Kagawa from the Bundesliga outfit last summer, too.
