Man Utd Transfers: 5 Essential Summer Targets

2. Victor Wanyama

Wanyama With Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs nearing the end of their long and illustrious playing careers, Sir Alex Ferguson is going to have to address his midfield in the summer if one, or both call time of their tenures at Old Trafford. United are hardly lacking cover on the flanks, with Wilfried Zaha set to join the likes of Nani, Young and Valencia on the wing this summer, but central midfield is a concern. Kagawa has endured a fairly lacklustre start to his United career since moving from Dortmund, whilst Anderson's future at the club is far from clear after the Brazilian admitted recently that he has tried to force an Old Trafford exit on numerous occasions. With Tom Cleverley still maturing and Michael Carrick, as reliable as he is, by no means a world class midfielder, United seem to be in desperate need of new recruits. Celtic's Victor Wanyama has impressed United scouts in the past, and Ferguson sent his spies to watch him score against Barcelona in the Champions League last year, whilst the man himself watched Wanyama score in a 4-0 rout of Dundee United last month. The Kenyan has been one of Celtic's best players this season and has been one of the driving forces behind his sides impressive Champions League run. The Scottish Champions have been trying to tie Wanyama down to a long-term deal but with nothing yet agreed on paper, a number of top European sides have begun monitoring developments, including Arsenal and Tottenham. Ferguson would face stiff competition if he were to enter the race for the player, but the imposing strength and aerial prowess Wanyama brings to the table would afford a Yaya Toure-type player who is capable of dominating the centre of midfield in the same way Roy Keane used to.
