Man Utd Transfers: Sir Alex Ferguson's 5 Best And Worst Signings

2. Peter Schmeichel - Signed from Brondby in 1991 for £750K

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFhAm67r9h8 Manchester United have not had the best history with goalkeepers, but there is no denying that Peter Schmeichel is arguably the greatest goalkeeper in Premier League history. Sir Alex Ferguson purchased the Dane from Brondby in 1991; for a small fee of £750k, and this was clearly one of the greatest bargains in the many transfer windows which have passed by. His heroic efforts in a number of games provided countless clean sheets, the finally the security Manchester United so desperately needed at the back; and it is clear that Schmeichel played a massive role throughout the 1990s where Manchester United dominated English football. His commanding presence gave the opposition strikers, as well as his own defence many nightmares, a physical presence between the sticks he capped eight glorious years with Manchester United, topped off with the treble win in 1999. Since then we United have gone on to buy a handful of goalkeepers, Fabian Barthez, Tim Howard, Massimo Taibi, Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea; the closest of the lot is van der Sar who is seen as Manchester United€™s second greatest goalkeeper ever, behind the brilliant Schmeichel, and it remains to be seen whether de Gea can make the same impact in his time at the club. Although he went on to join Aston Villa and arch-rivals Manchester City; there is no doubt that Schmeichel remains a Manchester United legend and one of the greatest purchases Sir Alex Ferguson has ever made.; playing 292 times for Manchester United before sailing off on the club's greatest ever night.
