Over the years, the Magpies haven't been short of left-backs, with the likes of John Beresford, Didier Domi and Olivier Bernard variously remembered as some of the best in the Premier League. Sadly for all of them, after an uninspiring start, Spaniard Jose Enrique proved to be the most impressive. Initially pushed behind Charles N'Zogbia in the running for the left-back berth in the first team under Sam Allardyce, Enrique came into his own during the Championship season after putting on some upper body weight. He had already shown promise as one of the only shining lights in the relegation season, but the addition of more strength to his passing and defensive abilities made him the real deal. Since leaving for Liverpool - a side he turned down for Newcastle initially - the Spaniard hasn't hit the form he enjoyed on Tyneside, but that doesn't dilute his impact at left-back in black and white.
