Spurs: 10 Things Pochettino Must Do To Make His Side A Force Next Season
10. State His Cup And League Ambitions Early On
Tottenham are a club with a high cup pedigree, as evidenced by their twelve domestic cup final appearances, and as such the club are always ranked highly as potential winners of both domestic cups. The problem with this synonymy is that Spurs are now expected to try and compete on four fronts: the FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and a top four Premier League finish, and while success is unlikely in all four, the Argentinian has to prove to the everyone that Spurs are a competitive team and whether he is going for all four or targeting certain trophies. The issue Pochettino has to quickly overcome is how competitive Spurs are going to be in each competition: stating that the team will challenge, but then fielding a weakened side won't go down well with the fans. His Southampton team in the FA Cup last season is a great example of this: the team reached the fifth round and looked like having a legitimate chance of reaching the final and potentially winning the competition, but he played a significantly weakened team against a struggling Sunderland side and promptly went out. The Europa League and Premier League will be discussed in detail later on in this list, but the fans will at least expect Pochettino to be honest, stating what he wants Tottenham's ambitions to be and try to match them. Sadly, as shown at Newcastle of course, if he does admit that one competition won't be as important, he faces the ire of the fans.
