That's the reality here - Defoe is looking more of a threat and scoring at a higher rate than Roberto Soldado. It can easily be said that Soldado needs time to settle and that Defoe has played against poorer opposition, but the fact is Soldado had plenty of time on the pitch against Dinamo Tbilisi and has played 306 more Premier League minutes than Defoe - yet they've scored the same number of competitive goals (4) for their club and two of Soldado's have come from the penalty spot. Should Spurs be starting Defoe in the Premier League while Soldado settles? It's a question Andre Villas-Boas should be seriously asking himself. Form should always trump transfer fee, though that's not always the case in football these days, and it is admittedly hard to justify paying such a large fee for Soldado if he's not going to start, but it's also very harsh to leave out Defoe when he's doing what is asked of him when he plays.
